Thursday I went with my brother to see this documentary about a Tribe Called Quest. Now I do love hip-hop. Always have and I always will. But after seeing this movie, my appreciation for hip hop has definitely soared. Everybody knows Bonita Applebum and Check The Rhime, but how they got started, the chemistry, drive and passion that Ali (too fine), Q-Tip, Phife and Jarobi- especially Tip had the break up and the reunion was filmed. M.Rapaport, director, included views of current influential producers, Mary J Blige, member from the Roots, & more. Pharrell’s connection & respect for Quest is very real and very apparent. Tip’s love for producing the songs & finding the background music & beats are amazing, his ear is very sharp. The rhymes & flow of Phife was just so natural and Ali’s quiet yet important aspect to the group is all captured. Also, their was a nice chunk of the movie about how the group meshed with the other similar hip hop artists, such as De la Soul, and the community (and respect) that they had for one another…no beef.
Personally, I enjoyed the this movie I believe I enjoyed it enough to see it again. Hip Hop back in the late `80s thru to the `90s had totally different vibe. The goals and messages with their rap and style too is so different from today’s artists. The falling apart of the group, the hurt egos and love that Phife and Tip have toward one another makes this as real as it can get.
I know my brother wanted to see more of how they influenced artists of today, but he overall enjoyed it. We both walked out with a smile, bopping to the beats in our head of Quest, both went home to listen to Quest and other hip hop artist for about 2 days straight
